Contesting & DXing with Vintage Station - KØIZ, Jo
|
|
|
Here is my vintage station that I use for SSB DX and contests. Station consists of Collins KWM2A, 75S3b Receiver, 30L1 Amp, and Amp Supply LK800C. Antenna is four-leg long wire V beam. Great fun.

What's it going to take to get a geosynchronous ham satellite? In a word, MONEY! Paying for the launch would cost megabucks, well beyond AMSAT's (or even ARRL's) present or foreseeable resources. The days of free launches are long gone, especially to high orbits. w2rs@arrl.net

DXCC Status
A contributor states, "Currently there are only two countries that do not issue Amateur Radio licenses to their citizens, Yemen and North Korea. Thousand of deserving Ham's worldwide who enjoy working DX are shut out of any hope of obtaining the #1 Top of the Honor Roll status due to this. It would seem rational that these two countries (and any others who take a similar position) should be deleted from the official DXCC list in view of this. Why recognize a country on the DXCC list that does not recognize Amateur Radio? What say you?"

I like to try out different rigs and compare them. I have to say that my favourite rig is in fact the Multibander Kenwood TS2000. Although up against competition in my shack at the moment such as the MP1000 MKV and The Icom 781, The Kenwood holds its own and its definately going to be the last rig to leave the shack. The FT847 unfortunately comes in at last place overral, but still an outstanding multibander solution. There are things about different rigs that you tend to fall in love with, and always wish that you could find a rig that has everything you want, well for me the Kenwood TS2000 has all this except looks and size, I wish it was as big as the 781 because I like big lumpy rigs on the bench.
The setup you see has all 6 connected (The FT847 is reserved now for portable use only) and running through a 6-way audio switch, and then through a BHI digital filter and finally into the filtered Icom speaker. This configuration lets me have good audio quality out from the middle of the shack bench whatever set I use, and filtered just the way I like it. There is a fair bit of Antenna switching capability going on, but hidden in the picture. The Kenwood / Icom and Yaesu are all connected to a PC for logging ease, but it is the Kenwood that I usually use for working PSK31 and CW as it performs outstandingly with a Rigblaster plus, and its keying capability is very nice.
The Icom ICR9000L is my favourite receiver for ear-wigging, its HF reception outperforms all the other sets for clarity and selectivity, and its sensitivity is on a par with the others. The Bearcat is a secondary scanner I use for keeping an eye on some favourite frequencies locally. The Icom 910H is now only connected for 23cm use, having been taken over on 2m and 70cm now by the superior Kenwood.
Thanks for looking, hope to work you on the bands soon.
Best Regards
Gary (GW0KTL): QTH Newport, South Wales UK (IO81LO)
